Food and Drinks

There are a lot of food establishments (restaurants and fastfood chains) in different parts of Metro Manila. Make sure to check the level of security before entering any restaurant or hotel. MicroSourcing advises everyone not to accept food and/or drinks from strangers, especially those inside private vehicles. Never drink water directly from faucets. Instead, buy bottled water from Wilkins, Absolute, and other reputable brands.

Major credit cards are accepted. Be vigilant when using them to avoid incidents of credit card fraud.

Visiting Places

The Philippines, particularly Metro Manila, offers numerous recreational areas and establishments. When visiting public places, be wary of your surroundings. Always bring your bag with you. Dress down - avoid wearing too much jewelry.

If possible, avoid overcrowded places such as bars and clubs. Always be aware of your surroundings when going to open-air markets in Divisoria and Baclaran as these are frequented by a lot of people. Also, it is not advisable to go to flood-prone CAMANAVA area during the rainy season. Dark alleys of Ermita and Malate should also be avoided.

Public Transportation

Tourists, both local and foreign, prefer riding a taxi because it is widely available and it is a convenient form of public transport. A taxi should have a meter, otherwise, wait for another taxi. At the time of writing, the flag down rate in Manila is Php30. The fare increases by Php2.50 for every 250 or 300 meters. Make sure to have small Philippine peso denominations for the fare.

Do not enter a taxi that already has a passenger. Also, memorize the plate number so you can contact the driver in case a problem arises. When inside the taxi, lock the doors and roll up the windows. If possible, avoid riding other forms of public transport such as jeepney, bus, and train.

Dealing with People

Filipinos are known to be very warm and hospitable people, but for security reasons, seek help from the police or local authorities when necessary. They will be able to provide the information that you need. Also, be wary of the people around you especially those who try to befriend or talk to you.
