Travel Tips
When to go:
The end of June through September is the low season. People go during
these months at the risk of a little rain in order to take advantage of
low rates and have the beach to themselves. March through May are
summer months and are very busy. During November and December, the
climate is at its best as the weather is mostly dry but not humid and
the water is perfect. Christmas and New Year are always busy times.
International sporting events like the Boracay International Funboard
Cup and the Annual International Paraw Cup are held in January and
February. January is also the time of the Ati-Atihan Festival which is
much like Mardi Gras. The busiest time of the year, however, is during
Holy Week. This is when the biggest parties are held.
Attire
Boracay is a very laid back beach. Almost
all bars and restaurants are on the beach, open air, with sand on the
floor. If you want, you can wear beachwear day and night without even
wearing shoes. You are likely to get wet on your way to the Boracay
jetty port via small outrigger boat (banca) anyway, so don't dress too
fancy.
Luggage
It's best that your luggage be light since, regardless of which travel
route you choose, there will be quite a bit of walking involved.
Transporting luggage on and off the banca can be a hassle. Besides,
anything you need including beachwear and essentials will be available
for cheap on the beach. There are porters that will be happy to help
carry your bags for a tip. Make sure they are wearing an ID and are in
proper uniform.
Money
Although there are ATMs in Boracay, there are
times when they may run out of money or are offline. Thus, it's always
a good idea to have plenty of cash on hand for all the food, drink and
activities you will engage in on the island. You can also bring US
dollars in both traveler's cheques and cash. You'll also need cash in
hand for the boat fare from Caticlan to the Boracay jetty port (50 PhP
Environmental Fee, 50 PhP terminal fee, 25 PhP boat fare) and for tips
(usually 20 PhP). The rate is usually higher when changing money in
Boracay so it's advisable to change your money at the airport before
departure.
Tourist Center
Located between stations 2 and 3,
this is a one-stop-shop for tourists and business affairs: money
transfer, foreign exchange, credit card facilities, postal, telecom and
internet services. It also has safety deposit boxes and photo
development services.
