The jeepney, or more commonly known to locals as jeep, is the most widely known means of transportation in the Philippines.
A jeepney can take you from one town to another. It is also an inexpensive way to go around an area. It usually has a fare matrix which indicates the appropriate fare for every destination. At the time of writing, the minimum fare is Php7 for the first four kilometers and it increases for every additional kilometer.
Jeepneys have fixed routes and you can ride or alight at any point. Just call out “Para!” to the driver and he will stop the jeep.
Jeepneys can be found everywhere, from major cities to remote areas. The widespread use of the jeepney makes it the “king of the road”. Alternative modes of transportation may emerge, but the jeep remains to be a vehicle that is constantly found in almost every street.
A typical jeepney can accommodate 20 passengers. Some can seat 16 people while others can carry more than 20. It is both versatile and durable. It can last for many years, withstanding wear and tear due to constant use.
The innate creativity and innovative thinking of the Filipinos pave the way for the evolution of the jeepney. Originated from the US military vehicles that the American troops left in the country at the end of World War II, jeepneys have become versatile and colorful vehicles dominating the Philippine streets. They are usually multi-colored and are adorned with different kinds of ornaments and religious figures. With colorful paints, loud horns, and additional lights, a typical jeepney for public transport reflects a very distinct Filipino identity and has become a symbol of the Philippine culture.
Every jeepney has its own style, and its most striking feature is that it can tell something about the personality of the driver or owner. For many people, the jeepney has become a tangible proof of their sacrifices and beliefs. Messages found at the front and/or rear end/s are common in most jeepneys, as well as rosary and religious images placed at the dashboard.
If you want to take a glimpse of the Filipino culture and reach places at a very affordable price, ride a jeepney... only in the Philippines.
