Arts & Culture

From museums, churches, and art galleries, to traditional dances and festivals, you will see that the arts and culture of the country are both diverse and full of color. These features can be attributed to influences left by Western and neighboring countries. Traces of the colonization of Spain and the US are evident in all aspects of Philippine culture. Here's a closer look at the arts and culture of the country:

Arts

Damian Domingo is recognized as the father of Filipino painting. Other artists who made a mark in Philippine painting include Hugo Yunzon and Nestor Leynes. Nowadays, there are a lot of modern painters who have their own distinct styles and themes. On the other hand, Filipino sculptors made a mark in the sculpture arena in the 19th century. One notable sculptor is Guillermo Tolentino whose career highlight was the creation of the Bonifacio Monument.

Music and Dance

Nationalism, love, and sadness are some of the themes depicted in Filipino folk music. As time progresses, different styles emerge in the music scene. OPM and Philippine rock are popular music themes in the country today.

Dance has become a form of expression. Traditional or folk dances are a major part of the Filipino way of living. A particular dance can be part of a ritual or sacrifice, or a form of courtship. Tinikling, cariƱosa, tiklos, and singkil are some of the folk dances in the country.

Culture

Filipinos are known to be very hospitable, resourceful, and hardworking. They have close family ties and can maintain a good, harmonious relationship with other people. Another cultural trait of the Filipinos is their sense of humor. No matter what their problems are, they always greet you with smiles on their faces.

Festivals are very common in provinces and towns. These are usually held to showcase native or local product/s that a certain province is known for. Since Filipinos value their religious beliefs, most festivals are held to celebrate the feasts of patron saints or as thanksgiving events for the blessings people have received for the entire year.

Colorful and diverse - these two words aptly describe the Philippine arts and culture. Visit the Philippines and see for yourself.
