Shopping

When you visit the Philippines, you will never run out of shopping areas to go to. If you are in the city, you can go to different shopping malls that offer a vast selection of products manufactured locally and abroad. Operating hours are usually from 10AM to 9PM daily, though these may vary especially during the holiday season. Major credit and debit cards as well as traveler's checks are accepted in most shops. Also, shopping malls have currency exchange centers if you need to exchange foreign currency to Philippine peso.

Aside from the malls in major cities, there are great shopping opportunities in outdoor bazaars and flea markets that exude local creativity. These offer a wide array of products and food items that are uniquely Filipino and at affordable prices. For bargain shoppers, haggling is common in these shopping areas so do not forget to make “tawad” (to haggle). You might get that great find at a lower price.

In the provinces, you will see the artistic side of the Filipinos in the handicraft products, fabric, jewelry, accessories, footwear, ornaments, furniture, and souvenir items. The country is also proud of its embroidered dresses and barong tagalog.

Numerous provinces are known for their native products. For instance, Paete in Laguna is popular for its wood furniture and other items made from wood. As the shoe capital of the country, Marikina offers nice and durable footwear. Romblon is known for its products made from marble, while Cebu is proud of its high quality acoustic guitars.

For a culinary experience with Philippine flavor written all over it, don't miss the food items and local produce that have become great pasalubong or treats to family and friends when you come back home. Zambales is known for its sweet mangoes, while Bicol is overflowing with pili products. Coffee lovers will surely enjoy Batangas coffee, and a special buko (coconut) pie from Laguna is best shared with loved ones. Bohol has its own version of Hershey's chocolate called peanut kisses. When you visit Davao, make sure to taste the durian and bring home some durian candies.

With countless shopping opportunities that the Philippines has to offer, the country is indeed a place for everyone who finds joy in discovering new products and getting a mouthful of tasty delicacies. Those items will surely be a constant reminder of your trip to the Philippines.
